7RAR in Afghanistan

This article appeared in 2012

When the 7th Battalion first deployed to Afghanistan in 2006, it just wasn’t possible to move freely outside the main population centre of Tarin Kowt.

When the battalion returned in 2008, its soldiers started the job of advising and mentoring the fledgling Afghan National Army 4th Brigade, pushing out into the insurgent-controlled valleys.

Now the battalion is back as the 7RAR Task Group, advising the 4th Brigade, whose four infantry kandaks (battalions) are quite capable of conducting operations independent of Australian assistance anywhere in a province where central government influence now extends to its farthest reaches.
