As previously advised a funeral service will be held for Major General Grey at St Christopher’s Roman Catholic Cathedral, Canberra Ave, Forrest, ACT at 1000h on Wednesday, 02 February 2022. A wake will follow at the Australian Federal Police College, Brisbane Ave, Barton, ACT. Dress for the funeral is coat and tie with medals.
Major General Grey joined the Army on the 14 February 1948 and graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon on 12 December 1951. During his career, he served in various regimental appointments including 17th National Service Training Battalion, 2 RAR, 3 RAR, and 7 RAR. Notable command appointments were as Commanding Officer 7 RAR (1968–71) and as General Officer Commanding, Field Force Command (1980–83). Other significant appointments were on the Australian Army Staff, London (1973–77) and as Chief of Operations – Army (1978–80).
Major General Grey saw operational service in Korea, Borneo and Vietnam. He was wounded in action during the Korean War. In recognition of his service in Borneo, Major General Grey was mentioned in dispatches. He was appointed as a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order for his service as the Commanding Officer of 7 RAR in Vietnam. In 1983, Major General Grey was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Australia for service to the Australian Army, particularly as Chief of Operations – Army and as General Officer Commanding, Field Force Command. Major General Grey retired from the Army on 15 February 1983 after 35 years of service, and following retirement from the Australian Army, he was appointed as the Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police. He held this appointment until 1988.

On Wednesday w Feb 22 we farewelled a great General and a wonderful man, Major General Ron Grey, AO, DSO.
He was a true ‘soldiers General’. He was of a breed that is no more. Those of us who the privilege to serve with him will honour him always.
Rest In peace General; you left a great legacy. I shall miss you greatly. You were a great friend, mentor and confidant.
