THE federal government will spend more than $300 million to fund the urgent deployment of rocket-warning systems to protect Australian troops in Afghanistan.
The coalition military base at Tarin Kowt came under insurgent attack on Thursday when three rockets were fired at it, injuring a non-Australian civilian contractor. It was the second rocket attack in the past two weeks.
The Weekend Australian understands the rocket-warning project was quietly approved by the government last week in response to the growing threat posed by Taliban rockets and mortars in Oruzgan province, where Australian troops are based.
